Scoring framework · UniProfile

How we score.

UniProfile rates English universities the way a credit agency rates a company. We combine quantitative data from official UK regulatory sources with a structured analytical framework developed by our team. The result is a single rating — HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW risk — backed by detailed sub-ratings across three areas.

The framework

Three areas, scored independently.

Each report assesses a university across three areas. Each area is rated on its own first, then combined into the overall risk rating. This is the same structure a credit agency uses: detailed sub-ratings underneath a single headline judgement.

01 · Financial health

Can the institution pay its way?

Drawn from HESA's annual Finance returns, covering surplus margin, staff cost ratio, liquidity, borrowing, and the year-on-year direction of travel. Thresholds are anchored to the concern bands published by the Office for Students for its own financial sustainability monitoring.

02 · Visa & regulatory standing

Can it sponsor students, and is the regulator concerned?

Drawn from UKVI's Student Sponsor Register and the quarterly Vis_D02 immigration statistics, alongside the Office for Students Register. We track sponsor licence status, the visa refusal-rate environment by applicant nationality, and any active conditions of registration — the formal signals that an institution is under scrutiny.

03 · Student outcomes & value

What happens to students and graduates?

Drawn from HESA Graduate Outcomes and the Office for Students National Student Survey. We show highly-skilled employment and further study 15 months after graduation, student satisfaction with teaching and assessment, and — for undergraduate reports — typical graduate salary against the sector median.

The rating

How we combine the signals.

Each area is rated independently before being combined into an overall rating. Area ratings are weighted by their predictive importance, with financial and regulatory signals carrying the greatest weight.

The exact thresholds and weights used in our framework are proprietary, refined through ongoing review of which signals best identify institutions that have subsequently entered financial or regulatory difficulty. What we always show you is the underlying data and its source — so you can see exactly what each rating is built on.

Not a ranking

What we are not.

UniProfile is not a ranking. We do not score universities on prestige, research output, or student experience as a competitive league table.

We score the institution itself — its financial stability, its regulatory standing, and its ability to deliver on the commitment it makes when it accepts a student.

Freshness

How often ratings update.

Every rating refreshes as soon as the underlying official data is released. Each report shows the date and source of every input, so you always know how current it is.

Independence

Who pays us.

We never take money from universities — and we never will.

UniProfile is independent. We are not funded by, owned by, or commissioned by any university, government body, or recruitment agent. Our revenue comes only from the students, families, and advisers who pay for our reports. That is the entire business model — and it is the one thing a ranking funded by university advertising can never offer you.
